A Practical Guide to Your First Topic-Based Content Audit

As an SEO or content strategist, you’ve lived in spreadsheets. You’ve run countless content audits, mapping keywords to URLs, tracking rankings, and identifying “thin content.” Your job has been to take inventory of your digital assets and optimize them for the search engine’s rules.

But the rules have changed. The old audit—the one focused on a simple inventory of keywords—is no longer enough.

The questions that matter today are not “What keywords do we rank for?” but “How comprehensively do we cover a topic?” and “How clearly do we answer the fundamental questions a user has?”

This requires a new kind of audit. It’s time for your first topic-based content audit. This isn’t just a new report; it’s a new way of seeing your work—the first step in becoming a Knowledge Architect.

The Mindset Shift: From Keywords to Questions

A keyword-based audit is about inventory. A topic-based audit is about understanding. It’s a shift from cataloging what you have to evaluating how well you serve.

The goal is to map a user’s entire journey of understanding, from their first naive question to their final, sophisticated query. It’s about building a complete, logical library of information, not just a collection of pages that happen to rank for related terms.

Your 4-Step Topic-Based Audit

Grab your favorite spreadsheet tool. We’re going to use it, but we’re going to ask different questions.

Step 1: Define Your Core Topics

Start by zooming out from your keyword list. Look at the clusters of terms you track. Instead of a list like “SaaS metrics,” “customer churn,” and “LTV,” define the overarching Core Topic: for instance, “Measuring SaaS Business Health.” This is your anchor. Do this for the 3-5 most important areas of your business.

Step 2: Map the User’s Journey Through the Topic

For one Core Topic, brainstorm the logical sequence of questions a person would ask. Think like a teacher designing a curriculum.

  • The ‘What Is?’ Stage: What are SaaS metrics? Why are they important?
  • The ‘Which Ones?’ Stage: Which metrics matter most for an early-stage startup? What’s the difference between a vanity metric and an actionable metric?
  • The ‘How To?’ Stage: How do I calculate my LTV:CAC ratio? How do I set up a metrics dashboard?
  • The ‘What’s Next?’ Stage: How do I use these metrics to forecast revenue? What are the common mistakes to avoid?

List these questions in a logical order. This is the blueprint for your ideal knowledge library.

Step 3: Audit Your Content Against the Blueprint

Now, go through your existing content and map each piece to a specific question on your journey map. As you do this, ask the hard questions:

  • Does this URL provide the single best, clearest answer to this question?
  • Do we have multiple, conflicting pages trying to answer the same question? (These are major red flags for data purity).
  • Where are the gaps? Are you explaining “what” something is and “how” to do it, but completely missing the crucial “why it matters” step in the middle?

Step 4: Identify Your Assets and Liabilities

Your final step is to categorize your content based on this new evaluation.

  • Canonical Asset: This is a page that perfectly answers a specific question on your journey map. It is clear, definitive, and trustworthy. Protect and enhance this page.
  • Consolidation Candidate: These are multiple pages that address the same question. They create confusion for both users and AI agents. Your job is to merge them into a single, canonical asset.
  • Toxic Data Source: This is outdated, ambiguous, or just plain wrong content. It actively harms your authority. Mark it for immediate deletion and redirection.

By the end of this process, you won’t just have a spreadsheet. You’ll have a strategic roadmap for transforming your collection of pages into a trusted library of knowledge. You’re no longer just an optimizer; you’re building the very foundation of your company’s digital authority.
